As the warmer weather arrives, it’s important to remember that heat can quickly become dangerous for our pets. Unlike us, dogs and cats cannot cool themselves down as easily, and heatstroke can happen faster than many people realise.
Here are a few simple ways to help keep your pets safe this summer:
- Make sure fresh water is always available
- Walk dogs during the cooler parts of the day
- Never leave pets in a parked car — even for a few minutes
- Provide shady spots and cool areas to rest
- Be mindful that pavements can burn paws in hot weather
Signs of heatstroke can include:
Excessive panting
Drooling
Weakness or collapse
Vomiting
Confusion or distress
If you are worried your pet may be overheating, contact your vet immediately.
Let’s keep our furry friends happy, healthy and cool during the summer months.
