For many cats, a trip to the vet can be a stressful experience. Cats are naturally territorial and sensitive to changes in their environment, so unfamiliar sights, sounds, smells and travel can all be unsettling.
Here are five simple ways to help make your cat’s visit more comfortable:
1. Make the carrier part of everyday life
Leave the carrier out at home with comfortable bedding inside so it becomes a familiar, safe space rather than something that only appears before a vet visit.
2. Use familiar scents
Place your cat’s favourite blanket in the carrier and include items that smell like home to help them feel secure.
3. Travel carefully
Secure the carrier in the car so it stays level and cannot slide around. Drive smoothly and keep noise to a minimum.
4. Cover the carrier
A light towel or blanket over the carrier can help reduce visual stress and create a sense of safety during the journey and while waiting at the practice.
5. Stay calm and reassuring
Cats are very good at picking up on our emotions. Staying calm and speaking gently can help your cat feel more relaxed.
Regular check-ups are an important part of keeping your cat healthy, and a little preparation can make the experience much less stressful for both you and your feline friend.
