Meet Fizz, one of our recent patients who developed a painful abscess after a grass seed worked its way into his foot.
In the photo above, you can see where the grass seed entered the foot, and in the second, the swelling caused as it migrated and created an abscess.
While they may look harmless, grass seeds can travel through the body, causing infection and, in some cases, serious damage to the chest, abdomen, or other tissues.
Grass seeds most commonly cause problems in feet, ears, and eyes, but they can penetrate the skin almost anywhere.
Thankfully, after an anaesthetic, removal of the grass seed, treatment of the abscess, and some antibiotics and pain relief, Fizz has made a full recovery and is back to his happy self!
If you notice your pet licking a paw excessively, shaking their head, squinting, or developing a swelling, don’t wait – contact the practice as soon as possible!
